About Us

Alman Consulting is headed up by Alan Cook.

As a qualified Chartered Electrical Engineer with a post-graduate qualification in Business Management, Alan has over 30 years of experience as a managing director of both PLC subsidiaries and private limited companies. With particular skills in sales, marketing, and staff motivation and a track record of business growth and profit improvement he has successfully run several multi-million pound companies.

In 2005 he launched his own business consultancy service, ALMAN CONSULTING, utilising all the skills he had built up over the years.

Since 2012, Alan has worked with R&D Tax, applying his technical expertise to help SMEs prepare and submit robust Research and Development tax claims. As the R&D tax environment has become significantly more complex and scrutinised, Alan has developed a deep understanding of evolving legislation, HMRC guidance, and compliance requirements. He works closely with clients to ensure claims are technically sound, well-evidenced, and aligned with current expectations, helping businesses confidently access relief while managing risk in an increasingly challenging regime.

In 2023 the company launched its Capital Allowances service.

Capital Allowances on property are a highly specialised and often under-claimed area of tax relief. While a company’s accountant will usually include a basic Capital Allowance claim for plant and machinery, many claims fail to identify and maximise allowances on embedded fixtures and fittings within a building. As a result, significant relief is frequently left unclaimed.

Embedded fixtures and fittings are integral, functional elements that are built into a property and cannot be removed without damage. These can include heating and ventilation systems, air conditioning, hot and cold-water services, electrical and lighting installations, fire and security systems, and many other qualifying assets. The scope is extensive, but identifying what qualifies — and valuing it correctly — requires detailed technical knowledge of Capital Allowances legislation and case law.

A qualified surveyor with specialist Capital Allowances experience can carry out a detailed review of your property, identify qualifying assets that are often overlooked, and provide a robust valuation. The resulting surveyor’s report forms a key part of the evidence required by HMRC, giving confidence that the claim is accurate, compliant, and defensible.

For many businesses, a specialist review uncovers substantial additional allowances, improving cash flow and reducing tax liabilities — often with no impact on day-to-day operations. If you’ve acquired, constructed, refurbished, or extended a commercial property, a professional Capital Allowances review could unlock relief you didn’t know you were entitled to.
